2022 Chinese Taipei Women Team Badminton Squad

I am quite surprised with the squad of Chinese Taipei’s Women Team for the Uber Cup 2022 in Thailand early last month. I could predict the team would have Hsu Wen Chi (whether she would be set as the WS2 or WS3), Lee Chia Hsin with her new partner, Teng Chun Hsun, and Chang Ching Hui/Lee Chieh Chen who has good improvement in their last European international challenges/series tour.

Of course, Tai Tzu Ying would play as the main WS or WS1. But, Pai Yu Po’s name wasn’t on the list. Therefore, Hsu Wen Chi would be the WS2 in the team.

I think I don’t need re-write about Hsu Wen Chi’s profile since I have written herself in the other post. You can read it here. In earlier 2022, Hsu Wen Chi starts her tournament journey with pleasing results. She got a runner-up title in Slovak Open Future Series 2022 after Aditi Bhatt of India defeated her in the dramatic-three games: 21-19, 10-21, 23-25. Then, she became a winner in the 57 Portugal International Championship 2022 after defeating Yeung Sum Yee of Hong Kong representative in a straight-set.

Next, Hsu Wen Chi is followed by Sung Shuo Yun, the girl who was born 25 years ago, would be played as WS3. Sung Shuo Yun’s last win was in FZ Forza Norwegian International Series 2019 after defeating Vietnam representative, Thuy Linh Nguyen: 21-16, 21-18. Also, she got a silver medal in Scottish Open International Challenge after being defeated by Qi Xuefei of French. Sung Shuo Yun was in the squad for Badminton Asia Team Championship (BATC) 2018. At that time, she was also played as the WS4.

We move to the next player who was set as the WS4, Chen Su Yu.

Chen Su Yu’s last win was in Vietnam International Series 2016 when she was 19 years old. At the time, she defeated Lim Yin Fu of Malaysia, who had beaten Sung Shuo Yun in the semifinal round. In 2019, Chen Su Yu was chosen into the squad for Tong Yun Kai Cup in Hong Kong, and Sudirman Cup 2019 in China. Chen Su Yu was born on December 19th, 1997. And, she is the youngest WS among the others.

Even though Sung Shuo Yun and Chen Su Yu were absent from the international tournament, surprisingly they don’t lose their mental spirit on the court. They still fight against their opponents on the court. Especially, Shuo Yun was able to play in three games versus He Bing Jiao of China in the final group stage match.

In the Women Double Dispicle, the Official of the Chinese Taipei Badminton  Association keeps Hsu Ya Ching to lead the girls in the team as the senior who already has lots of experience on the court. But, Hsu Ya Ching won’t be partnered up with Hu Ling Fang. As I guessed before, Hsu Ya Ching will play with her junior, Lin Wan Ching since they already are partnered up in the national tournament in early 2022.

Lin Wan Ching is five years younger than Hsu Ya Ching. She was born on January 11th, 1995. In 2019, Lin Wan Ching was partnered up with Kuo Yu Wen in WD disciple, and with Lu Chia Pin (recently is playing in MS disciple) in Mixed Double (XD) disciple. At the time, Lin Wan Ching was more successful in playing in Mixed Double with Lu Chia Pin. They became a champion in Maldives International Future Series 2019 after defeating The Malaysian pair, Velayutham Roobenraj/Venosha Radhakristan in a straight game: 21-10, 21-18. Still in Maldives International Future Series 2019, Kuo Yu Wen/Lin Wan Ching also became the champion after defeating the host representative, Thilini Pramodika Hendahewa/Kavidi Sirimannage in two games: 21-19, 21-18.

In the last 2021, in the post “Taiwan Badminton Team for Sudirman Cup 2021” I introduced you to the new pair in Women Double disciple who played as the alternate pair at the time. They are Chang Ching Hui and Lee Chieh Chen. You can read the article at the link above. After the event of Sudirman Cup 2021, Chang Ching Hui/Lee Chieh Chen’s best result is in YONEX Slovenia International Series 2022. However, they only reached the semifinal round after The Mexican pair defeated them in three games: 19-21, 21-18, 15-21.

Another Women Double that starts to renew the WD squad of the Taiwan badminton national team is the senior player, Lee Chia Hsin, who is partnered up with Teng Chun Hsun. It has been so long time since we haven’t seen Lee Chia Hsin play in Women Double. Also, I don’t think that Teng Chun Hsun would be separated from her previous partner, Li Zi Qing since Li Zi Qing and Teng Chun Hsun still has an okay result in lowered-level international matches, such international series or international challenge. I think Li Zi Qing/Teng Chun Hsun could be said to be the number #1 WD in Taiwan’s national badminton junior level.

In Yonex Italian Junior International Series 2018, with Li Zi Qing, Teng Chun Hsun became a champion. Not only that, Teng Chun Hsun and Wei Guan Xun (who recently plays in MD disciple) also became a champion in Yonex Italian Junior International Series 2018. In Yonex Slovak Future Series 2018, Li Zi Qing/Teng Chun Hsun got the gold medal after defeating the Thailand pair, Ruethaihanok Laisun/Supamart Mingchua in three games: 22-20, 19-21, 21-5. Next, Li Zi Qing/Teng Chun Hsun won 53 Portuguese International Championship 2018. In 2022, Teng Chun Hsun be partnered up with her senior, Lee Chia Hsin. They got some good achievements so far.

Although the Taiwan Uber Cup Squad  has just stopped in the quarterfinal stage, I think, or everyone could see that they may have some promising players in the future who will follow their Queen, Tai Tzu Ying’s trend at the elite level. Those who played in Uber Cup 2022 have a good performance on the court. They only need some tournaments to make they are being consistent with their good performances.

Alright, that’s all that I want to share about the Taiwan Uber Cup Squad 2022. I hope I could share something good with them at the end of the year 2022. Let me make a summary of the boys and girls of Taiwan’s national badminton players this year later. It is quite interesting to share with you all.

2022 Chinese Taipei Men Team Badminton Squad

The Taiwan badminton players didn’t join the international tournaments for a long time since the Covid-19 pandemic was coming. Furthermore, the Taiwan government makes a strict policy for entering and leaving the country. There are only some second and third layers of the team who send out to join the European international series tour. It makes some badminton lovers miss seeing Lee Yang/Wang Chi-Lin and the other players playing on the court again, including me.

In early 2022, The Official Chinese Taipei Badminton Association held a national tournament for their players to compete with each other. It seems they were looking for players for the TUC Squad since in May, BWF would hold the Thomas&Uber Cup 2022. Because some of the players who succeed in the national tournament are on the team. The Men Team of Badminton placed as the 4th seeded. Meanwhile, The Women Team’s placed in the 5th – 8th seeds.

Finally, after Thomas&Uber Cup 2022 has been released, I am very happy to see Taiwan badminton player has been released, as well. And, as I predicted before, Taiwan Badminton Men’s Team send their best squad for Thomas Cup 2022.

Read: Taiwan Badminton Squad For Sudirman Cup 2021

In Men Single disciple, they still have Chou Tien Chen as the MS1 and Wang Tzu Wei as MS2. Liao Jho-Fu who joined the team in Thomas Cup 2020 (New Dates) as the MS4, still join the recent squad. But, Chi Yu Jen who played as the MS3 in Thomas Cup 2020 (New Dates), is now replaced by Lu Chia Hung who hasn’t played in many international tournaments since 2019. However, Lu Chia Hung showed a good result in the national tournament earlier since he defeated Wang Tzu Wei in three games.

In Men Double disciple, of course, their MD1 and also the Gold Olympic Tokyo 2020, Lee Yang/Wang-Chi-Lin joined the squad for Thomas Cup 2022. I had guessed before that Lee Yang/Wang Chi-Lin would be played for the entire matches they through. Taiwan Badminton Men Team squad also has Lu Ching Yao/Yang Po Has as the MD2. It was quite surprising since last a year Lu Ching Yao had surgical treatment for his injury. Could they make it?

Like what I typed on the Chinese Taipei Badminton Squad for Thomas&Uber Cup 2020 (New Dates) before, Su Ching Heng used to not join the squad since his ex-partner, Liao Min Chun decided to have retired from the international tournament in early 2021. For almost a year we didn’t see Su Ching in any international matches. Then, in 2022 he shows himself up again in European international series matches with a new partner on the court! He is Ye Hong Wei. A young boy who was born 23 years ago. Before Ye Hong Wei had paired up with Chiang Chien Wei, they are in the 134th BWF world ranking (ranking update per May 17th, 2022). Chiang Chien Wei/Ye Hong Wei become a winner in Wellish Open 2019 after defeating Zach Russ/Steven Stallwood (England). The first international tournament Su Ching Heng/Ye Hong Wei is Slovak Open 2022. They got into the quarterfinal round and lose to the Hong Kong pair, Chow Hin Long/Lui Chun Wai: 20-22, 20-22. They became a winner in 57 Portugal International Championship 2022 after defeating their compatriot, Wei Chun Wei/Wu Guan Xun in a straight game: 21-13, 21-14. Ye Hong Wei himself even be a winner in Mixed Double disciple with Lee Chia Hsin.

The Chinese Taipei Men Team joined Group C altogether with a men's team of India, Germany, and Canada. It seems easy for the boys? Not at all. We could say the Group C of Thomas Cup 2022 is super tricky to predict.

Here I show you the journey of the Taiwan badminton men's team in Group C and tell you how they become a group winner.

2022 Thomas & Uber Cup
GS 1 VS CAN: 5-0

2022 Thomas & Uber Cup
GS 2 VS GER: 5-0

2022 Thomas & Uber Cup
GS 3 VS IND: 3-2

The team won in the last group stage match against India dramatically, 3-2, since Lu Ching Yao/Yang Po Han lead the team to 2-1.

In the quarterfinal, the round Taiwan team met the boys from Japan. Actually, they have a high chance to go to the semifinal round. Unlucky, they slipped it away and finally, let Japan win the game.

2022 Thomas & Uber Cup
Quarterfinal VS Japan: 2-3

That's all the Taiwan men's team journey in the 2022 Thomas Cup where they should give up to be a winner of the Thomas Cup 2022 in the quarterfinal round. However, with this squad, I think they will become stronger in the next Sudirman Cup 2023 with the girls.

These photos streamed I had taken from Facebook of Yang Po Han, Wang Tzu Wei, and the Chinese Taipei Badminton Association.
